The French government aims to establish an age limit for the use of social media. The proposal suggests that minors under 13 should not be allowed access to social networks.
“I want to work with the platforms to create a real digital barrier to ensure that no minor under 13 has access to social networks,” said French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal to the newspaper “Le Parisien” on Sunday.
Gabriel Attal: “This is a very challenging but not impossible task”
Adolescents between 13 and 15 should only be able to use social media with parental permission. Currently, in France, adolescents are legally allowed to create an account on social networks independently only from the age of 15. Before that, they require their parents’ consent.
Attal expressed confidence in being able to address the issue. “This is a very challenging but not impossible task.” Working with platforms, there is a way to achieve the goal. Facebook or Tiktok are aware that their reputation is at stake. “They will cooperate,” Attal added.
