These images went around the world: Heavily armed terrorists move from house to house on October 7th, either to abduct or murder Jews. Over 1,200 people fell victim to the Hamas pogrom. Thousands were injured and traumatized. The horror was correspondingly great, as was the wave of solidarity. Governments from Washington to Warsaw pledged their support to Israel. Pro-Israel demonstrations with thousands of participants were organized. And the fight against anti-Semitism was back on the political agenda.
The atrocities of Hamas and the significant increase in anti-Semitic crimes reminded many people of the terrible consequences anti-Semitism can have for Jews around the world, not just in the Middle East. In Germany, authorities are recording a dramatic increase in politically motivated crimes – the head of domestic intelligence rightly speaks of a turning point.
A dangerous shift in discourse is currently taking place
The logical consequence of this alarming development would be an intensive discussion on how to sustainably combat anti-Semitism and better protect Jewish life. Instead, a worrying shift in discourse is taking place: The focus of the societal debate is no longer on the terror of Hamas and the deadly threat of anti-Semitism, but rather on Israel’s response to this attack. Alongside careful criticism of the Israeli military’s actions, open anti-Semitism is repeatedly displayed, which is also propagated unreflectively by representatives of supposedly progressive circles.
Not only is Israel denied the right to self-defense – it is further accused of committing genocide against the Palestinian population. Under the pretext of differentiation, the crimes of Hamas are relativized, even glorified as acts in an alleged war of liberation against colonialists. The core idea of this argumentation is that Israel is ultimately to blame for the catastrophe of October 7th.
It is these patterns of thought that lead to a synagogue in Berlin being targeted with a Molotov cocktail. That neo-Nazis in Dortmund hang a flag from the window with the inscription “Israel is our misfortune.” And that young people, often with a migration background, march through the streets across the country, shouting anti-Israeli slogans and calling for the caliphate.
Combatting anti-Semitism is an essential part of liberal identity
For liberals, it is essential to oppose this anti-Semitism. This is not only a moral imperative, but also an essential part of liberal identity. Because every anti-Semitic incident, every attack on Jewish people, is not only a direct assault on their dignity and rights, but also on the principles of liberalism: the inviolable dignity of every person, pluralism, and the unalienable rights of the individual.
They form a fundamental contrast to anti-Semitism, which not only rejects the democratic principles of our society, but also challenges and threatens them. Therefore, to be liberal does not just mean not to be anti-Semitic. To be liberal also means to actively combat anti-Semitism.
For a liberal, it can only be intolerable when Germany’s historical responsibility for over six million murdered Jews is relativized. When Jewish kindergartens, schools and synagogues have to be under police guard. When Holocaust survivors can only appear in public with personal protection. Equally intolerable is ites, wenn der Staat Israel unter dem Schutz der Meinungsfreiheit verteufelt und entwertet wird.
Unsere Unterstützung muss Israel und der Zivilbevölkerung im Gazastreifen gewidmet sein
Unsere Unterstützung Israel gegenüber als Liberale ist entscheidend. Aber sie muss auch der Zivilbevölkerung im Gazastreifen gewidmet sein. Diese Unterstützung gründet nicht auf Israels militärischen Aktionen gegen die Hamas, sondern darauf, dass die Menschen seit sechzehn Jahren unter dem Druck dieser Terrororganisation leiden und ausgebeutet werden. Kein Liberaler kann tolerieren, wenn Menschen unterdrückt und ihrer Rechte beraubt werden.
Die Unterstützung für Israel bedeutet selbstverständlich nicht, dass die israelische Regierung für ihr Handeln nicht kritisiert werden sollte. Im Gegenteil: Ein aufgeklärter Liberalismus hinterfragt Regierungshandeln und zeigt eine gesunde Skepsis gegenüber Autoritäten.
Die israelischen Regierungen unter Führung Benjamin Netanyahus haben durch den gezielten Ausbau von Siedlungen im Westjordanland und den Angriff auf die unabhängige Justiz schweren Schaden angerichtet. Doch wer das Massaker vom 7. Oktober damit verteidigt und die Hamas als Befreier glorifiziert, verkennt den ideologischen Vernichtungswahn, dem diese Gruppierung verfallen ist.
Wer das Existenzrecht Israels anzweifelt, kann sich nicht auf den Liberalismus berufen
Der Terror entspringt einem zutiefst verwurzelten Hass, der sich nicht nur gegen Israel richtet. Das in ihrer Gründungscharta verankerte Ziel der Hamas ist die Auslöschung alles jüdischen Lebens. Wer also angesichts des Hamas-Terrors die historische Verantwortung der israelischen Regierungen von David Ben-Gurion bis Benjamin Netanyahu erörtert, sollte sich klar machen: Israel, die einzige Demokratie in der Region, muss jeden Tag um das eigene Überleben kämpfen.
In diesen Zeiten moralischer Komplexität und ethischer Vielschichtigkeit bietet der Liberalismus einen Kompass: Er verpflichtet zum Kampf gegen den Antisemitismus – egal ob er von rechtsradikalen Reichsbürgern, linken selbsternannten Antikolonialisten oder palästinensischen Befreiungsideologen kommt. Und er verpflichtet zu einer klaren Haltung zum Existenzrecht Israels. Wer dies infrage stellt, sollte sich nicht mit dem Prädikat des Liberalismus schmücken.
