Nach einer Zeit des schnellen Aufstiegs verliert die AfD seit einigen Wochen erstmals wieder beträchtlich an Unterstützung in den Untersuchungen. Einige Beobachter und Politikexperten vermuten eine Verbindung zur kontroversen Correctiv-Recherche, die am 10. Januar 2024 publiziert wurde und seitdem für Aufsehen sorgt.
Während eines Treffens zwischen Vertretern der AfD, Mitgliedern der CDU/CSU-nahen Werteunion und Individuen aus dem rechtsextremen Spektrum war die „Remigration“ von in Deutschland lebenden Ausländern sowie Deutschen mit Migrationshintergrund diskutiert worden.
Die Verärgerung über die dort geäußerten Anpassungs- und Abschiebephantasien brach sich wenig später bundesweit Bahn. Hunderttausende gehen seitdem auf die Straße und demonstrieren gegen Rechtsextremismus und Rassismus – und gegen die AfD.
Nach Massenprotesten fängt die AfD-Leitung offenbar an zu agieren
Ob die zurückgehenden Unterstützungswerte der AfD aber direkt mit den Demonstrationen in Verbindung stehen, darüber kann nur spekuliert werden. Klar ist aber, dass die AfD ihren Ton in Bezug auf „Remigration“ seitdem langsam ändert.
Frühere Äußerungen wie die des AfD-Bundestagsabgeordneten René Springer, sozialpolitischer Sprecher der Fraktion, differenzieren sich von dem, was die AfD-Leitung heute bekannt gibt. So verfasste Springer noch am 10. Januar 2024 auf X: „Wir werden Ausländer in ihre Heimat zurückführen. Millionenfach. Das ist kein Geheimplan. Das ist ein Versprechen“.
In eine ähnliche Richtung ging eine Erklärung von AfD-Fraktionsvize Sebastian Münzenmaier im Bundestag im November 2023: „Die Losung der Stunde lautet Remigration – und zwar millionenfache Remigration“.
Noch deutlicher wurde AfD-Thüringen-Chef Höcke bei einer Veranstaltung Mitte Dezember 2023: Es sei kein Problem, die Zahl der Illegalen in Deutschland „um einige Millionen zu verringern“. Allein durch eine Änderung des Staatsbürgerschaftsrechts könne man Massen von Ausländern dazu bewegen, „ins Heimatland zurück“ zu gehen. „Wir werden ohne Probleme mit 20 bis 30 Prozent weniger Menschen in Deutschland leben können.“
Die Zahl von 20 bis 30 Prozent impliziert, dass zwischen 20 und 25 Millionen in Deutschland lebende Ausländer und Deutsche mit Migrationshintergrund das Land verlassen müssten.
AfD schlägt plötzlich ganz andere Töne in Bezug auf „Remigration“ an
Von solchen radikalen Äußerungen versucht man sich nun offenbar zu rehabilitieren. Die AfD beginnt, ihre Haltung zum Thema zu relativieren: Unter der Forderung nach Remigration verstehe man lediglich die „rechtsstaatliche und gesetzeskonforme Rückführung ausreisepflichtiger Ausländer in ihre Heimat“, heißt es in einem bundesweit verbreiteten Flugblatt der Partei, berichtet „ Bild “.
Weiter heißt es: „Eine willkürliche kollektive Abschiebung von Ausländern“ oder gar „die Abschiebung deutscher Staatsbürger mit Migrationshintergrund“ stoße bei der AfD auf „entschiedene Ablehnung“. Die Partei mache keinen Unterschied „zwischen deutschen Staatsangehörigen mit und ohne Migrationshintergrund“. Alle Deutschen seien „Teil unseres Staatsvolks“.
Die vielen gut eingegliederten Bürger mit Migrationshintergrund seien der AfD ausdrücklich willkommen – „die Politik der AfD vertritt auch ihre Interessen!“, heißt es laut„Picture “ further on the leaflet.
And: „According to the 2021 Bundestag election program, we will consistently deport approximately 250,000 foreigners who are legally obliged to leave the country.“ Otherwise, the AfD only wants to deport “threats, extremists, and serious criminals” more consistently and repatriate war refugees once there is peace in their home country.
Current AfD approach follows a “known pattern”
What lies behind the approach of initially adopting radical positions and then moderating them? Is the AfD now getting cold feet due to falling poll numbers, or is there a tactical calculation behind it?
“What we are currently observing has always been the tactic of the right-wing populists and the AfD: a crossing of boundaries and discourse provocation, followed by their relativization,” says Philipp Rhein, a sociologist and research associate at the University of Kassel in the field of “Political System of the FRG – Statehood in Transition,” to FOCUS online.
Rhein, who conducted numerous interviews with AfD voters for his book entitled “Right-wing Time Relations,” compares the party’s current approach to Gauland’s “bird shit” statement or Höcke’s “monument of shame” statement – “all in the style and with the aim of exploiting the resulting public or parliamentary outrage and particularly to portray themselves as victims of the resulting contradiction.”

For Rhein, all of this is “a perfidious, destructive but unfortunately successful game with and against the public”. And so it is now as well.
What is becoming even more apparent in the current debate, however, is that “with the framing of ‘remigration’, the AfD and the new-right thinkers around Sellner achieve exactly what they want: they are conducting extremely successful new-right metapolitics,” explains Rhein.
This refers to a strategy of the right-wing “cultural struggle” and the “cultural revolution from the right” that operates through language, terms, topics, and dispositions.
Specifically, this means: “The AfD can officially and outwardly distance itself from the inhumane ideology because the term is on the one hand too vague and fits well into the deportation discourses, for example, of Olaf Scholz (‘We must deport on a large scale’).”
At the same time, the chosen term has a history, an interpretation, and an intention that has been clear since the Corrective investigations. “And we know what the people who were in Potsdam really imagine under it.”
And now – and this, according to Rhein, is the success of the AfD – they bring this term and the associated inhumanity and volkisch ideology into the parliaments. The term is thus set and disseminated in official parliamentary documents. “And because terms are not innocent, it is already a sad success for the AfD,” summarizes the AfD expert.
AfD aims to be eligible for economically and socially established migrants
David Begrich, a researcher on right-wing extremism, also recognizes in the AfD’s attempts to reinterpret their “remigration” a “known pattern”. Nevertheless, AfD politicians seem to be unsettled by the amount of opposition they are currently facing, he tells FOCUS online. Representatives of the party in eastern Germany, particularly, are no longer accustomed to this.
The apparent contradiction between the previous, more radical statements of AfD representatives regarding “remigration” and the newer, more moderate positions can also be explained by a “political struggle for interpretation” within the party, according to the expert. This is about how openly radical the party should appear, says Begrich.
At its core, there is agreement. There is disagreement over the form. “So far, the AfD has benefited from the radicalization of its content. This could now have hit a limit.”
With the repositioning in the “remigration issue”, the AfD, according to Begrich, aims to be eligible for migrants who are economically and socially established in Germany, entrepreneurs, and business owners. “However, this is not a consensus within the party. The volkish fundamentalists in the party reject a pragmatic opening for migrants as a target group.”
The debate of the past weeks, however, has not only disadvantages for the AfD, Begrich continues. “It keeps the term ‘remigration’ and especially the interpretation proposed by the AfD high in public discourse.”
And the AfD benefits from this.
