US Tank Bradley destroys three Russian tanks and prevents breakthrough
A video from the east of Ukraine shows a spectacular defense action of a Ukrainian tank against a looming breakthrough of Russia. It was posted by soldiers of the 109th Brigade of Ukraine, who are located north of Avdiivka to defend the village of Stepove.
Three Russian infantry fighting vehicles of the type BMP-2 can be seen approaching a position of Ukrainian soldiers to within a few meters. Just before they can overrun the defenders of Stepove, a Bradley infantry fighting vehicle comes to the rescue – a last-minute salvation, so to speak.
The tank, which Ukraine received from US stocks, approaches from the left and immediately takes out the two Russian tanks approaching from the right with its 25-millimeter cannon. “We hit the BMP. It tried to break through,” exclaims the soldier filming the events.
Then the third tank, approaching from the left, is targeted by the Bradley, with its armor being gradually destroyed by the shots. The soldier filming urges the tank on. “Come on, get it. It’s tearing it apart. The side armor is already off. Come on!” Then he and his comrades open fire on the Russian soldiers who have by now left their tanks.
Coalition disagreement over Taurus deliveries
Despite differences of opinion in the coalition, the traffic light factions in the Bundestag have almost unanimously rejected a delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. A motion by the CDU/CSU faction, which explicitly calls on the federal government to supply the country under attack by Russia, was rejected on Wednesday evening by a large majority.
Members of the Green Party and FDP are actually pushing for a Taurus delivery to Ukraine within the coalition. However, they justified their voting behavior by stating that the Union’s motion was linked to a plenary debate on the annual report of the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces. For example, FDP defense expert Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann criticized in a written statement, which is available to the German Press Agency, “It is downright indecent to mix today’s debate on a report by the Parliamentary Commissioner, which pertains exclusively to the concerns of the soldiers of the Bundeswehr, with the debate on future support for Ukraine.”
The Taurus is one of the most modern missiles of the Air Force and can destroy targets such as a bunker even from a great height and distance. However, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) had decided at the beginning of October not to supply this weapon to Ukraine for the time being. The fear was that due to the range of 500 kilometers, Russian territory could also be hit. However, there is considerable resistance within the Green Party and FDP against the Chancellor’s stance.

Nach beinahe zwei Jahren des russischen Angriffskriegs stecken die neuen Ukraine-Milliardenhilfen, die vom wichtigsten Unterstützer USA gewährt werden sollen, momentan wegen eines innenpolitischen Streits fest. Auch die EU konnte ein eigentlich geplantes Hilfsprogramm für die Ukraine in Höhe von 50 Milliarden Euro für die kommenden vier Jahre wegen eines ungarischen Vetos bislang nicht freigeben.
Nach einem Treffen von US-Präsident Biden mit den Spitzen beider Parteien aus dem Kongress bleibt die Frage nach zukünftigen US-Hilfen für die Ukraine aber offen – doch das Weiße Haus gibt sich optimistisch. Biden sei durch die Fortschritte bei den Verhandlungen ermutigt und strebe eine parteiübergreifende Einigung an, hieß es am Mittwochabend (Ortszeit) in einer Mitteilung. Die Republikaner haben die Freigabe weiterer Mittel für die Ukraine an eine Verschärfung der Asylpolitik in den USA geknüpft.
Das Weiße Haus hatte Mitte Dezember erklärt, dass bis zum Ende des vergangenen Jahres die bisher bewilligten Mittel aufgebraucht sein würden. Die bisher letzte Bereitstellung von Militärhilfen für die Ukraine erfolgte am 27. Dezember. Biden hatte bereits Ende Oktober beim US-Kongress ein 105 Milliarden US-Dollar (gut 94 Milliarden Euro) schweres Hilfspaket mit Unterstützung für die Ukraine und Israel beantragt. Davon sind mehr als 61 Milliarden US-Dollar für die von Russland angegriffene Ukraine vorgesehen.
Die USA gelten als wichtigster Verbündeter der Ukraine im Abwehrkampf gegen die russische Invasion. Seit Kriegsbeginn im Februar 2022 haben die USA militärische Hilfe in Höhe von mehr als 44 Milliarden US-Dollar für Kiew bereitgestellt oder zugesagt.
Russland berichtet über ukrainische Angriffe
Am Abend meldete Russlands Verteidigungsministerium einen ukrainischen Angriff auf das westliche Gebiet Brjansk, der abgewehrt worden sei. Zwei Raketen und drei Drohnen seien von der Luftverteidigung abgefangen worden, hieß es. Laut Behörden gab es in der unweit der Ukraine gelegenen Region keine Schäden und Opfer.
Laut dem Moskauer Bürgermeister Sergej Sobjanin wurde ein Drohnenangriff auf den Stadtbezirk Podolsk abgewehrt. Vorläufigen Angaben zufolge gab es keine Verletzten oder Schäden. Eine weitere Drohne wurde laut russischem Verteidigungsministerium im Gebiet Leningrad abgefangen. In Russland wird für das Umland von St. Petersburg immer noch der sowjetische Name Leningrad verwendet.
Was wichtig wird am Donnerstag
Unter anderem endet an diesem Donnerstag in Brüssel eine zweitägige Sitzung des Nato-Militärausschusses, vor dem Hintergrund der Kämpfe in der Ukraine.
