Biden tritt offiziell hier gar nicht an

Deshalb arbeitet ein Team seit Wochen daran, Phillips und andere Bewerber früh zu schlagen. Längstläuft eine inoffizielle Aktion, die darauf abzielt, demokratische Wähler in New Hampshire dazu zu bewegen, den Namen des Präsidenten bei der Primary auf den Wahlzettel zu schreiben.
Um Unterstützung zu zeigen, reisten in den vergangenen Wochen zahlreiche Mitglieder des Kabinetts “zufällig” in den Granite State, um die Leistungen der Biden-Administration zu loben. Sie betonten einstimmig, dass dies rein gar nichts mit dem Wahlkampf zu tun habe.
Es ist eine riskante Taktik, auf die Biden sich eingelassen hat. Schätzungen des Politikwissenschaftlers Scala zufolge muss er 60 bis 70 Prozent der Stimmen erhalten, um sämtliche Zweifel seiner Parteikollegen zu zerstreuen. Es ist durchaus möglich, dass er dies erreicht. Aber es ist keineswegs garantiert.
Ein Misserfolg könnte unvorhergesehene Auswirkungen haben. Der letzte Präsident, der in New Hampshire offiziell nicht kandidieren wollte und auf eine Write-In-Kampagne seiner Anhänger setzte, war Lyndon B. Johnson im Jahr 1968. Er gewann die Primary knapp mit 48 Prozent der Stimmen. Das Ergebnis enttäuschte sowohl ihn als auch seine innerparteilichen Befürworter.
