“We are not the chosen ones. We are the elected ones.” Willy Brandt once appealed to the humility of the political class with these words. Brandt said this shortly after his first major triumph in October 1969, the election of the first Social Democratic Federal Chancellor since 1949. He could also address it to the traffic light coalition now – especially towards the Greens.
All three traffic light coalition parties are currently facing great difficulties. The fear of new elections still unites the three parties, which have hardly any common ground in terms of content.
Lanz vs. Trittin: “Welcome to Pleasant-TV”
The legalization of cannabis and the possibility that every 14-year-old can change their gender annually are a meager basis for a parliamentary majority that has come together as a “progressive coalition”. The attitude that one is largely free of errors prevails among the Greens. They demonstrated this at their party conference last weekend and now Jürgen Trittin demonstrated it on “Markus Lanz”.
Trittin, the unofficial head of the party’s left wing, portrayed the situation of his party so positively on Thursday evening on ZDF that it became too much for the moderator Lanz: “Welcome to Pleasant-TV,” he sarcastically commented.
It is true that the Greens are relatively better off when comparing current poll numbers with the 2021 election results than the SPD and the FDP. However, they are part of a coalition whose values are much worse after two years than those of any previous government.
Trittin accuses Merz of “Trumpist” politics
Trittin overlooks one more thing: the CDU/CSU is no longer willing to form a coalition with the Greens if there is another option. That’s why the election winners Kai Wegner (CDU) in Berlin and Boris Rhein (CDU) in Hesse prefer to form a coalition with the SPD rather than the eco-party.
The Green’s aura has suffered greatly. And how does Trittin react? He attacks opposition leader Friedrich Merz. He is pursuing a “Trumpist” policy. The Green fundamentalist explained this: Merz is pushing his party “towards a political single government”.
The comparison with Trump is a nasty insult and is consistent with Trittin’s style of politics. In any case, no one has yet come up with the idea that Merz does not want to acknowledge the results of democratic elections.
Of course, Trittin assumes that something will stick from such attacks. Nevertheless, his outbursts make no sense. The CDU/CSU is well aware that in the German electoral system, absolute majorities are almost impossible to achieve – especially for a party standing at 30 percent.
The Greens portray themselves as seemingly better politicians – and people
Since the Greens returned to federal government, they have shown a certain arrogance. As saviors of the global climate and preachers of diversity, they present themselves as the better politicians – and not least better people.
Their own sense of mission inevitably promotes the tendency for self-representation, for the staging as politicians of a special kind – detached from the rest of the gray mass.
So Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock spends by far the most money on her image polishing among the traffic light coalition politicians. It’s likely that she always has her eye on the duel with Robert Habeck for the 2025 lead candidate, according to “Business Insider”.

Es ist wichtig zu wissen, dass die Regierung im Bundespresseamt eigene Fotografen beschäftigt. Bei Auslandsreisen werden Kabinettsmitglieder jedoch zusätzlich von Agentur-Fotografen begleitet. Es gibt also kein Mangel an Fotos. Der Unterschied liegt darin, dass die vom Steuerzahler finanzierten Fotografen nur sorgfältig inszenierte Aufnahmen liefern.
Die Außenministerin barfuß am Strand des Pazifik-Inselstaates Palau: So schön, so sympathisch, so werbewirksam setzt nicht jeder Fotograf die Grünen-Ministerin ins Bild.
Um auf Fotos gut auszusehen, muss man auch entsprechend gestylt sein. Die Kosten für ihre Visagistin beliefen sich im vergangenen Jahr auf 137.000 Euro. Baerbock, beziehungsweise der Steuerzahler, gibt also im Jahr rund 310.000 Euro aus. Das reicht, um 120 Bürgergeldfamilien mit zwei Kindern einen Monat lang zu versorgen.
Urgent Green compares CDU to anti-Semites
Wer sich nicht für gewählt, sondern eher für auserwählt hält, der glaubt sich gegenüber dem politischen Gegner alles herausnehmen zu können. Dafür lieferte der Urgent Green Daniel Cohn-Bendit jetzt ein schlimmes Beispiel.
Der einstige Europaabgeordnete, der viele Jahre politisch in Hessen aktiv war, ist ziemlich empört, dass die CDU seinen Grünen den Stuhl vor den Kabinettssaal gestellt hat.
Seine Wut gab Cohn-Bendit gegenüber der „Süddeutschen Zeitung“ so zu Protokoll: „Im Grunde genommen wollen sie (die CDU) die Parenthese, dieses Zwischenspiel mit den Grünen, beenden. Dieses bürgerliche Gesocks“ – er entschuldigt sich sofort für das Wort und schimpft gleich weiter – „die Bürgerlichen haben sich die Grünen zum Hauptfeind erkoren. Sie meinen, die Republik gehört ihnen allein. Da sind die Grünen wie die Juden, sie stören nur.“
Es war in der Bundesrepublik unter Demokraten bisher nicht üblich: den politischen Wettbewerber mit Antisemiten gleichzusetzen, die die Juden auszurotten versuchten und unverändert versuchen.
Aber für die Grünen gelten offenbar andere Gesetze. Sendungsbewusstsein, gepaart mit Verachtung für den politischen Gegner: Da vergisst man leicht, dass man „nur“ gewählt, nicht erwählt ist.
