“In principle, it doesn’t matter anymore whether journalists speak the truth, because all of us here feel the truth!” These sentences reached me a few days ago in an email, in response to my last column.
It was written by a 55-year-old woman from near Berlin. She told me about her youth spent in the GDR. The fall of the wall had been a great stroke of luck for her, but now it’s just like back then. “We have arrived back where we were 35 years ago.”
New malevolent spirits arising
“Feeling” the truth, this sentence interested me the most. Even though I consider comparisons to dictatorship exaggerated, something must feel like it did for her, in her youth. I decided to give her a call.
After all, she’s far from the only one who thinks this way. I have come across such statements frequently, from people who are convinced that new malevolent spirits are arising in Germany. Interestingly, they don’t mean the AfD when they refer to malevolent spirits. Rather, they are referring to people who can imagine voting for the AfD.
Constrained within patterns of thought
It is 8 o’clock in the morning when I call the woman near Berlin. She is an early riser. By profession, she is a goldsmith. Her father was a goldsmith, and her whole family has many craftsmen, watchmakers, and engravers. Her husband is a master mason, and they have two children. Normal people, she says.
She tells me that she experienced the essence of the GDR up close during her school days. “This imposed communism, being constrained within patterns of thought. We were supposed to believe and think what was drummed into us.” It was an open secret that the state media was lying to the people. But they failed to enforce the desired thinking on many GDR citizens.
Educated into immaturity
She was 20 when the wall fell. She had just completed her goldsmith apprenticeship. The fall of the wall was a huge opportunity, she remembers. “Suddenly, we had the opportunity to create something through our work.” Since then, she feels she has been very fortunate in life overall.
But something from that time has now returned. She has that feeling again, sensing a lack of freedom, as before the fall of the wall. “We’re being forced into what we should think, say, eat, and do.” People are being educated into a certain immaturity, just like in the GDR, she says.
“The state takes care of everything, as long as you obey. As long as you work, so that we can do something for climate protection, redistribute the money.” Redistributing it even to those who are not inclined to work, is particularly annoying to the woman on the phone. That others are resting on their work.
Many in the East feel this discomfort, she says
Many in the East have this gut feeling, just like her. They are particularly sensitive to such developments. “We have much more of these antennas, to what really happens around us.”
What is real is not in the media. Instead, they are constantly bombarded with messages like “the AfD is terrible, they’re all Nazis, you should all use gender-neutral language.” And she continues defiantly: “But we won’t allow any ideologies to be imposed on us. That’s how the East ticks.”
When the woman reads articles in online media, she and her husband find the reader comments underneath most important. “Because that’s how we gauge how accurate our gut feeling is. After all, the feeling comes first, but second is the evidence.”

Ein Umfeld der Anpassung
Ihrer Überzeugung nach kehrte ihr Bauchgefühl im Jahr 2015 während der Flüchtlingskrise zurück. Seitdem empfand sie erneut die Notwendigkeit, sich anzupassen, sich neuen Denkstrukturen anzupassen und Probleme zu bekommen, wenn sie sich widersetzte.
Die Corona-Pandemie hat dies alles noch verstärkt. Sie meint, Grundrechte seien ausgehöhlt worden. „Die Demonstrationsfreiheit, die Unversehrbarkeit der Wohnung. Ich habe mich gefragt, wo die Freiheiten hin sind, für die wir doch gekämpft hatten.“
Plötzlich erlebte sie auch eine neue Denunziationskultur. Nachbarn sollten sich gegenseitig melden, wenn sie gegen Coronaregeln verstießen. Das Gefühl, überwacht zu werden. Ähnlich wie damals, als bei ihrer Jugendweihe – dem DDR-Pendant zu den christlichen Festen – ein stiller Zuhörer von der Stasi in die Gaststätte hinein platziert wurde.
Gut und Böse – die Bösen seien jetzt die AfD und deren Wähler
Die Anruferin ist in einer Umgebung aufgewachsen, in der es die mit der passenden, sozialistischen Gesinnung gab und die mit der verpönten, der falschen. Bis heute wundert sie sich, warum gerade sie das Abitur machen durfte, war ihr Vater doch eigentlich ein „böser Kapitalist“. Eine Welt aus Gut und Böse – die Bösen seien jetzt die AfD und deren Wähler, sagt sie.
Was sie sich wünscht: „Dass wieder unterschiedliche Meinungen vorkommen dürfen, ohne dass jemand sagt: ‚Igitt, du bist Grüner oder igitt, du bist AfD-Wähler‘. Es muss wieder auf Augenhöhe geredet werden. Mir passt auch die Ansicht von einigen meiner Nachbarn oder Familienmitgliedern nicht, aber dennoch sitzen wir an einem Tisch, trinken Kaffee und diskutieren. Da müssen wir wieder hinkommen, dass auch in der Zeitung Dinge, die nicht populär sind und die eine bestimmte Bevölkerungsgruppe nicht hören will, wieder diskutiert werden und man dafür nicht an den Pranger gestellt wird.“
Sie war mal Mitte
Ihre politische Heimat sieht sie eigentlich in der bürgerlich-liberalen Mitte, bei der FDP. Zumindest früher, fügt sie hinzu. „Ich bin da stehen geblieben, habe mich gar nicht wegbewegt. Aber die Parteien haben sich wegbewegt. Also was ist passiert? Ich bin jetzt rechts. Obwohl ich meine Meinung nie geändert habe.“
