Dressed in rubber boots, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Saxony-Anhalt’s Minister President Reiner Haseloff (CDU) landed in Sangerhausen by helicopter on Thursday. The town had declared a state of emergency due to the flooding.
The two politicians, along with Environment Minister Steffi Lemke (Greens), were shown a dyke that is at risk of breaking. The politicians listened attentively and asked questions. However, the visit from Berlin was not well received by all the residents of the town.
While Scholz remains calm, Haseloff loses his temper: “You should go to work”
Right from the greeting, Scholz felt the dissatisfaction of the local people. “Go back immediately,” “Criminal,” or “Your politics are based on lies,” a group on site accused him.
Just before the politicians left, the Minister President of Saxony-Anhalt finally lost his temper. A man said, “Go home – goodbye!” While Scholz remained silent, Haseloff reacted with a “Yes, yes, stay calm.” But the man continued to heckle and reportedly provoked a reaction from Haseloff, saying, “Yes, you should go to work.” That hit home. Meanwhile, Scholz stayed calm and ignored the heckler.
