In the Guggenheim Museum’s foyer, the small group of German visitors stands and looks up at the spiral walkways with fascination. The Guggenheim spiral starts with a ramp that forms the steepest section, then the ascent becomes gentler. Suddenly, Wolfgang Schäuble starts to roll.
He can’t make it. It’s too steep. He wants to do it anyway. To prove it to himself, it can’t be otherwise. And then physics prevails over physique: Schäuble starts with enthusiasm, becomes fast at first, and then slows down even more. It’s followed by that moment of terror when the wheelchair comes to a stop in the middle of the steep section.

Two men walk closely behind the wheelchair user. One is his bodyguard. Schäuble really doesn’t like it when someone helps him. “He hates it,” he told the reporter standing next to him. We briefly look at each other – and reach out at the same time. And slowly push Schäuble up the ramp. Not a word is spoken, not in that moment and not later.
It’s a humiliating moment for Schäuble. He knows, of course, that being paralyzed from the third thoracic vertebra downwards, there’s much he can’t do anymore. But not being able to accomplish something he was determined to do must be crushing for him. He finds it shameful because Schäuble is an athlete, running, tennis, football (parliamentary team, always on the right wing), mentally meant, not physically. Ambitious athletes like him don’t give up. Having to give up due to physical inadequacy is far more humiliating than being defeated by a stronger opponent.
It’s a Saturday, politics not on the agenda, rare hours in the life of the 100% politician Wolfgang Schäuble.
On top of the World Trade Center, Schäuble suddenly turns as white as a sheet
We ride the elevator up in the World Trade Center (the old one, it’s March 1994). The observation deck is about 400 meters high, and that’s where the CDU man wants to go with his wife. Faster, higher, further – the next attempt.
Upon arrival, Ingeborg Schäuble steps forward curiously to the meter-high glass windows that make up the outer wall. We look out at the Manhattan streets from above, which look like a formation of Lego from up here. The depth lies directly behind the glass. But it’s so high that the fear of heights simply disappears.
Behind us, Schäuble is in his wheelchair. And now, he cautiously rolls backwards, towards the safe center. Backwards, meter by meter, until there’s a wall. He turns as white as the wall, and horror is evident on his face. We quickly leave the place of his perceived horror.
“I don’t have a fear of heights. I am afraid for my wife’s life”
“Do you have a fear of heights,” asks the reporter later, back on the street. Schäuble looks surprised and needs only one sentence for a whole spectrum of emotions: “I don’t have a fear of heights. I am afraid for my wife’s life.”
As a journalist, one can be grateful for such moments. There is much to learn again about a top politician, even if you have been following him politically for years; and have come to know and fear him as one of the most unapproachable politicians that the political arena has produced. One before whose cutting sharpness and biting maliciousness one must be on guard, a somewhat disturbing experience that many have had. As Torsten Krauel wrote in the “Welt” – Schäuble has earned his authority.auch „gebissen und zischelnd“.
Schäuble ist eine faszinierende, einzigartige Persönlichkeit, deren Leben einen eindeutigen Wendepunkt aufweist: Vor dem 12. Oktober 1990 und nach diesem Datum.
Vor dem Attentat war Schäuble ein ganz gewöhnlicher CDU-Politiker mit einem äußerst außergewöhnlichen Aufstieg als Helmut Kohls wichtigster Vertrauter. Seine einzigartige Karriere verdankt er seiner beispiellosen Effektivität, seiner Loyalität, seiner Intelligenz und ja, auch seiner Gnadenlosigkeit.
Schäubles politisches Leben verwandelt sich dann in einen körperlichen Kampf um das Dasein
Nach dem Attentat ändern sich diese Eigenschaften kaum, außer dass sich Schäubles politisches Leben nun auch als körperlicher Existenzkampf zeigt. Etwas, das es in Deutschland noch nie gegeben hat. Von da an kämpft er körperlich und oft auch seelisch am Limit – oft vor aller Augen.
Zwei Kugeln treffen Schäuble – eine ins Kinn und eine in den Rücken. In den dritten Schuss, den der Psychopath Dieter Kaufmann aus einer Smith & Wesson abfeuert, wirft sich sein Leibwächter Klaus-Dieter Michalsky, womit er Schäuble vermutlich das Leben rettet. Eine zeitlang spricht Schäuble von dem Attentat – verwirrenderweise – als einem „Unfall“.
Es wurde auch jetzt in den Nachrufen wieder behauptet, Schäuble sei aus Zufall Politiker geworden. Diese Version hat er tatsächlich auch selbst verbreitet, zum Beispiel gegenüber den Biographen Filmer und Schwan: „Eigentlich wollte ich nicht Politiker werden. Es war nicht meine Lebensplanung. Ich suchte meine berufliche Zukunft eindeutig in der Jurisprudenz.“
Viele mögen sich Schäuble als Kanzler gewünscht haben – seine Ehefrau sicher nicht
Ingeborg Schäuble hat daran nicht geglaubt: „Mein Mann wollte halt Politik machen. Er wollte im Grunde nichts anderes.“ Wolfgang Schäuble hat auch erzählt, hätte Ingeborg seine politischen Ambitionen auch nur erahnt, hätte sie ihn nicht geheiratet. In ihrem Bild sieht das Politikerleben ihres Mannes anders aus, es überwiegt mehr Dunkelheit als Helligkeit:
Die Politik hat ihr ihren Mann weggenommen und sie zur alleinerziehenden Mutter von vier Kindern, drei Mädchen und einem Jungen, gemacht. Und dann hat die Politik ihren Mann auch noch verkrüppelt. Und dafür gesorgt, dass der sich dann jahrelang gegen ihren Willen und fürsorglichen Rat vernachlässigen kann, weil er als privilegierter Schwerverletzter umsorgt wird, zur Not 24 Stunden pro Tag.
Viele mögen sich Schäuble als Kanzler gewünscht haben. Seine Ehefrau sicher nicht. Sie wollte einen Mann, der in einem Büro irgendwo im Badischen als Finanzbeamter tätig ist. Ruhig und sicher und wohl versorgt. Es ist anders gekommen. Weil er es – für sich und für sie – anders entschieden hat.
