Key industries stage nationwide protests: Strike chaos looms – brewing up next week in Germany

Germany faces the risk of sinking into strike chaos in the second week of the new year. Large-scale strikes and blockades threaten key sectors such as agriculture, rail, and transportation.

From January 8th, the farmers will join the general strike, and the German Locomotive Drivers’ Union (GDL) is considering a walkout. But that’s not all. There is also unrest among the hauliers. They may join the strikes as well.

Farmers determined to strike despite government concessions

So, the new year’s start could be a rough one. The tone of German farmers already is. Despite the Ampel government’s efforts to soften planned subsidy cuts, the farmers still intend to strike. Farmer Dominik Ernstberger from Sinsheim told SWR that the government’s concessions are a step in the right direction. However, all planned cuts should be reversed immediately. The Bavarian Farmers’ Association (BBV) and the association “Agriculture connects Bavaria” unanimously rejected the concessions from Berlin on Thursday.

On Thursday, January 4th, the Ampel announced plans to, among other things, withdraw the exemption of motor vehicle tax for farmers. In addition, the subsidy for agricultural diesel is now to be gradually abolished. Earlier, Farmers’ President Joachim Rukwied had announced a “very hot January.” From January 8th, the Farmers’ Association wants to be “present everywhere in a way that the country has not experienced before.”

In December of last year, thousands of farmers gathered with their tractors in the capital to protest against the Ampel’s austerity plans. Since then, there have been further protest actions in many places across the country. Some roads were also blocked. From Monday, the German Farmers’ Association has announced a whole week of action. Traffic chaos is foreseen in many places.

The state capitals are particularly affected. In more than half of them, there are already assembly registrations for Monday and the following days, or the authorities expect further registrations in the coming days, according to a survey by the “Editorial Network Germany” (RND).

Once again, numerous farmers with their tractors are expected. Protests are already announced in Bremen, Hamburg, Erfurt, Kiel, Mainz, Munich, Magdeburg, and Schwerin, according to the survey. In some federal states, even highways are supposed to be blocked. The SWR reports that in Rhineland-Palatinate in the West Palatinate area, farmers have announced to block highways on Monday. The exact locations are still unclear.

On Monday, January 15th, the German Farmers’ Association is organizing another major demonstration in Berlin, which will be mobilized nationwide.

Rail strike also looming from Monday

Anyone who thinks they can switch to the rail to get from A to B will likely be disappointed. GDL chief Claus Weselsky recently announced, “From January 8th, one should expect longer labor disputes.” Therefore, there will also be restrictions for train travelers and commuters next week.

The reason: The GDL train drivers are demanding a reduction of the weekly working hours from 38 to 35 and a salary increase (monthly salary plus 555 euros and a one-time 3000 euros). However, the situation is deadlocked – and strikes are the result.

Weselsky also emphasized recently that they are aware of the responsibility and spoke of a strike duration of three to a maximum of five days. He stressed that blockades would be announced at least 48 hours in advance.
