The chairman of the Turkish Community in Germany, Gökay Sofuoglu, has praised the reform of the nationality law in Germany, decided by the traffic light coalition government on January 19. The innovation makes the country and citizenship much more attractive for Turks, as it also allows for dual citizenship in the future without complications.
“If the new law spreads, the number of naturalization applications will continuously increase,” Sofuoglu told the Journalist Network Germany (RND). “Many will realize that the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.”
Sofuoglu anticipates 50,000 applications already this year
It is likely that the number of applications by Turkish citizens will reach 50,000 this year, Sofuoglu further stated. This number will reliably increase in the coming years.
However, he is concerned about the ability of the German authorities to manage this sudden reform at short notice. “In my opinion, the authorities are already overwhelmed,” Sofuouglu said.
Faeser views the reform as a step towards modernization
Prior to the decision, the Federal Minister of the Interior justified her bill before the Bundestag, as reported by “Tagesschau”. The simplification of naturalization for foreigners in Germany represents a meaningful “step towards a modern citizenship law that meets the requirements of the current time,” she said.
More appreciation must be shown for the people “who come to this country and contribute to making society function.”
